Market types

Over/Under and Handicap Markets

The over/under (or total) market asks one question: will the combined score in a match come in above or below a line set by the bookmaker? In a soccer match the line might sit at 2.5 goals. If the final score is 3–1 you are on the over side; if it is 1–0 you are on the under side. Because the line usually falls between whole numbers, there is no "push" in the final result — one side wins outright.

A handicap (or line) market levels the field by giving one side a head start or a deficit. If a strong side carries a −1.5 goal handicap, it must win by at least two goals for a bet on it to settle in your favour. The two market families work together: totals price the size of the score, handicaps price the size of the margin.

  • Fractional lines (x.5) remove the possibility of a draw
  • Whole-number lines can settle as a push, stake returned
  • Handicap values apply before the score is judged
  • Same-match totals and handicaps settle independently

Pricing

Enhanced Odds and Price Boosts

A price boost is an offer where a bookmaker publishes odds on a selected market that are better than its standard price. Boosts are usually limited to named matches or player markets, capped by a maximum payout, and available for a fixed window. The base price and the boosted price can sit side by side in the odds panel, so it is worth comparing both before deciding which one you are actually being offered.

Base priceThe standard odds the operator would otherwise offer for that selection.
Boosted priceThe improved odds on promotion, usually with a maximum payout cap.
Boost windowBoosts expire; once the window closes the base price returns.
Decimal odds read simply: odds of 1.50 return $1.50 for each $1 staked, stake included, if the selection wins. A higher number is a lower implied chance — boosted prices move you the other way, which is also why they carry caps and conditions.
Bet structure

The Main Types of Bets

Every wager you place is built from one of a handful of bet structures. A single bet is the simplest: one selection, one outcome. A multiple (accumulator) links several selections together — every leg must win for the bet to settle in your favour, which is exactly why the risk multiplies with each leg you add.

Single betOne selection on one market. Settles on that market's result alone.
Multiple / accumulatorTwo or more selections combined; all legs must win.
System betA grid of multiples where some legs can lose and part of the stake still settles.
Specials / propsMarkets on named events: player milestones, first scorer, match stats.
In-play

Live In-Play Betting

Live betting means placing or adjusting wagers while an event is in progress. Odds reprice as the action unfolds — a goal, a wicket or a break can move a price within seconds. In-play markets are often richer than pre-match ones: next point, next over, match result at any stage.

The practical difference from pre-match betting is volatility. Prices move fast, the market can pause during stoppages, and a bet that looked one thing a minute ago can be something else by the next. There is no skill shortcut that makes a live price "safer"; the same rules of staking within your budget apply, and the outcome is still decided by the event, not by the pace at which you act.

A Guide to Cricket Betting

Cricket is Australia's dominant betting sport, and the market structure follows the format. Test and ODI betting leans on totals, series and player milestones; T20 betting adds faster-cycling in-play markets such as next over runs and match winner at any wicket stage. The same match can carry dozens of markets across formats, so it helps to know which markets belong to which type of game.

  1. Step 1 — Match marketsMatch and series winners are the core markets; conditions, pitch type and toss advantage all feed into these prices.
  2. Step 2 — Format marketsTotals, first innings scores and player performance markets (half-century, top run scorer) are priced per format.
  3. Step 3 — In-play marketsOver-by-over markets open as the game progresses and settle on the state of play at each stage.

A Guide to Basketball Betting

Basketball betting is built around three pillars: the point spread, the total points and the player markets. Spreads level a mismatch between teams by giving the favourite a deficit (for example −5.5); the total sets a line on the combined score, the same over/under logic as elsewhere. Quarters and halves are separately priced, which is where most of the market depth sits.

Player markets — points, rebounds, assists, or a points-and-rebounds combination — make up a large share of the basketball board, especially in the NBA. Scoring in basketball is high and fast, so lines move quickly with injury news and rotation changes.

Point spreadFavourite carries a deficit; underdog carries a cushion. The margin decides the result.

Betting on Esports Tournaments

Esports betting works at two levels: individual matches and the tournaments they feed. Match markets include winner, map/round handicaps and total rounds, while tournament markets ask who lifts the trophy or which teams reach a bracket stage. Because rosters change between events, checking the current lineup before a match starts matters more than in most sports.

  • Match winnerThe core market for any scheduled series, settled on the series result.
  • Map & round marketsHandicaps and totals applied per map or per round within a series.
  • Tournament marketsTournament winner and placement markets across the whole event.

    Mobile Sports Betting

Licensed Australian bookmakers all offer mobile access, either as an app or a browser-based site. Functionally they give you the same markets as the desktop site — pre-match, in-play and specials — with the odds panel compressed to fit a smaller screen. In-play coverage is the main reason bettors move to mobile: the board keeps updating as the game does.

Two practical checks matter on a phone. First, make sure the operator's responsible-gambling tools — deposit limits, reality checks and self-exclusion — are reachable in the mobile experience, not buried. Second, be aware that a mobile screen invites quicker action; the same budget discipline applies, and none of the odds you see on a phone are different from the ones on desktop.

Using Stats to Inform Your Bets

Statistics help you understand what the price is based on — form, head-to-head history, home advantage, scoring trends. A stat that looks extreme in isolation often settles down once context is added: surface conditions in cricket, back-to-back fixtures in basketball, or a roster change in esports. Treat every number as an input to the operator's price, not a prediction of the result; no statistical model removes the chance that anything can happen.

    Choosing the Right Online Bookmaker

Picking a bookmaker is a compliance and convenience decision before it is a price one. The operator must hold a licence issued by an Australian state or territory authority, offer the markets you actually follow, and give you access to its responsible-gambling tools. Odds sharpness matters, but a licence you cannot verify matters more.

    • Confirm the licence and the issuing authority on the operator's own site
    • Compare market depth in the sports you follow, not just headline odds
    • Check deposit and withdrawal methods available to Australian customers
    • Test how fast customer support actually responds
    • Locate the responsible-gambling settings before you need them

Our ratings weigh six criteria: licensing and regulation, promotions and offers, payment methods, customer support, mobile experience and responsible gambling tools. Some links on Parvon are affiliate links and compensation may influence which operators are featured, the order in which they appear and the rating they receive — a fact we set out openly rather than hide.
